Live by Faith Not Feelings: Trusting God When Emotions Rise

Featured Post Image - Live by Faith Not Feelings: Trusting God When Emotions Rise

How do you live by faith, not feelings, when life feels overwhelming? Jeremiah shows us what that looks like. He was rejected because he faithfully delivered God’s message to Israel, even when the people did not want to hear it. Yet instead of letting fear and disappointment control him, he prayed, “O Lord, You have pleaded the case for my soul; You have redeemed my life” (Lamentations 3:58). His example teaches believers how to trust God when emotions rise and how to answer fear with faith.

Jeremiah did not let his feelings rule his faith. He spoke with confidence because he knew God would sustain him. He did not say, “I hope” or “I think” God would rescue him. Jeremiah trusted God’s word and answered with faith. That is the posture believers need today. If you want to live by faith, not feelings, you must learn to stand on God’s truth even when your emotions tell a different story.

Why You Must Live by Faith, Not Feelings

Everyone wants to be liked. But when you walk with God, some people will despise you. Like Jeremiah, you must shake off the doubts and fears that disturb your peace and choose to live by faith, not feelings.

God has considered every wrong concerning you, and He has made it right. Our faithful God expects that you rest in His peace. Because of the cross, you can live by faith, not feelings, knowing that Christ has already pleaded the case for your soul and redeemed your life. When emotions rise, anchor your heart in what God has already done instead of what you currently feel.

Don’t let your feelings dictate your faith. Satan may use your feelings to deceive you, especially when life leaves you feeling alone. The devil will try to convince you that everyone is against you and that God does not care for you. But when you live by faith, not feelings, you refuse to let shifting emotions define what you believe about God.

Remember, your faith is stronger than your feelings. If you want to live by faith, not feelings, you must choose God’s truth over emotional reactions. When you are redeemed by God, your faith in Him becomes a shield against doubt, fear, and spiritual confusion.

How to Trust God Over Your Feelings

Jesus said, “According to your faith, let it be done to you.” That means the Christian life is not led by unstable emotions but by steady trust in God. If you want to live by faith, not feelings, reject every emotion that tells you God has abandoned you or forgotten His promises.

How you respond to your feelings reveals what you believe about God. If you let emotions lead, you will eventually question His love and doubt His character. But when you know God loves you, you can rest in the assurance that He has redeemed your life. This is how believers live by faith, not feelings: by answering fear, despair, and defeat with the truth of God’s Word.

Your feelings are real, but they are not always reliable. They cannot lead you into truth; they can only tempt you to react unwisely. If you want to live by faith, not feelings, you must answer your emotions with faith. Faith believes the word of God. So when you feel that the world is against you, remind yourself, “If God is for me, who can be against me?” When you feel inadequate, say, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” This is the confidence that grows when you remember you are redeemed by God.

How Gratitude Builds Faith Over Feelings

Work at cultivating a grateful spirit. Be thankful and take nothing for granted. Gratitude helps you live by faith, not feelings, because it shifts your attention from what is wrong to what God has already provided. Instead of complaining about how hard life feels, thank God that you are alive and still held by His mercy.

Instead of complaining about what you do not have, thank God for what you do have. Be thankful for simple mercies, daily provision, and the strength to rise each morning. Thank God for the bed you slept in last night. A grateful heart makes it easier to trust God and live by faith, not feelings.

Apart from God’s mercy, your sentence would have been death. But God intervened and rescued you. Through Christ, He has redeemed your life and pleaded your case. So when your emotions feel loud, remember the gospel and choose to live by faith, not feelings. Let gratitude, truth, and trust in God lead your heart each day.
