Do not say,
“Why were the former days better than these?”
For you do not inquire wisely concerning this.
— Ecclesiastes 7:10

Have you ever found yourself reunited with a group of old friends, perhaps at a party or a school reunion? In these moments, conversations often turn to the past. However, you should consider not living in the past. Everyone starts talking about the “good old days,” recalling how different life seemed back then. These gatherings can be exciting and fulfilling. They can offer an opportunity to reminisce and celebrate the fun and memorable experiences from the past. However, these reunions can also be emotionally challenging. They can sometimes evoke feelings of nostalgia, making it difficult to appreciate the present. It’s easy to get caught up in wishing things were still the same. While it’s natural to cherish memories, it’s equally important to refocus on the present and what God is doing now. Don’t live in the past; live in the now.

Reflecting on the ‘Good Old Days’ Without Dwelling

Instead of allowing past disappointments to cloud your perspective, embrace the present with gratitude and a sense of anticipation. Trust that each day God will grant fresh opportunities for growth, connection, and new blessings. Align your thoughts with God’s, for He has good thoughts of you. He says, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah 29:11 NKJV).

That’s why it’s crucial not to live in the past, but rather to focus on the future. In the midst of depression, remember that God is always present and working. If you open your heart to what God is doing now, you will cultivate a spirit of thankfulness. It will enable you to receive the hope and promise He has set before you. It will free you from regret and also empower you to live fully confident that your future holds abundant possibilities.

Begin to thank God for today. Thank Him for another day of living. Be grateful that you were able to wash your own face this morning. Be thankful for that dry piece of toast and that hot cup of coffee. So, remember, it’s alright to visit the past, but don’t live there; move forward with optimism, for God has good plans for you.

Heavenly Father, I thank You for the great memories of my past. I will always cherish them. But I desire to move forward with You, in expectation of the many great and wonderful things You have in store for me.
