When life feels overwhelming, it can be difficult to stay grounded in faith. Yet Scripture reminds us that when we trust in the Lord, He is faithful to strengthen, guide, and deliver us. David’s example shows us what it looks like to rely on God in the middle of fear, pressure, and impossible situations.
“I will love You, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised; so shall I be saved from my enemies. In my distress I called upon the Lord, and cried out to my God; He heard my voice from His temple, and my cry came before Him, even to His ears.” — Psalm 18:1–3, 6
Why You Should Trust in the Lord
The Bible tells us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and not lean on our own understanding. If we acknowledge Him in all our ways, He will direct our paths (Proverbs 3:5–6). When King Saul heard that David would fight Goliath, he gave David his sword and armor. Saul reasoned that if David had any chance against Goliath, he would need more than a sling and a stone.
But David was not a warrior; he was a shepherd. He could not move freely in Saul’s armor, so he took it off and returned it to the king. David then reminded Saul of the times a lion and a bear attacked his father’s flock and how the Lord enabled him to rescue the lamb. With confidence in God, David said, “The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.”
When you trust in the Lord, God will deliver you. Do not focus on how big your problem is; focus on how great your God is. Whatever you are facing today, trust in the Lord and believe that He can deliver you. Recall the times that God gave you victory over your circumstances, and remember the moments when you knew without a doubt that He brought you through.
How God Will Deliver You When You Trust Him
When you say you trust in the Lord, do you truly believe He will deliver you? Or are you still depending on your own wisdom and strength? Saul was tall, but Goliath was taller. Saul was a warrior, but Goliath was a mighty warrior. No doubt Saul compared his own strength and size to Goliath’s and felt outmatched.
David, however, did not focus on his disadvantage. He knew he was no match for Goliath in his own strength. Yet he also remembered how the Lord had delivered him before. He recalled the time when God delivered him from the seemingly impossible. He was no match for the bear or the lion either, but because he trusted in the Lord, he prevailed against them.
David did not dwell on the fact that he was only a shepherd. He focused on the Lord, who was his Shepherd. David knew that God was with him even in the valley of the shadow of death. When trouble comes, do what David did: stand your ground in faith, and trust God to deliver you.
Speak in Faith
Scripture says we have the same spirit of faith as God. It reads, “And since we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, ‘I believed, and therefore I spoke,’ we also believe and therefore speak” (2 Corinthians 4:13). David believed God would give him victory over Goliath, and he spoke what he believed. He told Goliath, “This day, the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you… that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel” (1 Samuel 17:46).
Your words have power. Scripture says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue” (Proverbs 18:21). David spoke victory before he saw it because his confidence was in God. In Psalm 91:2, the psalmist says, “I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him I will trust.’” It is not enough to say that you believe in God. Faith also speaks in agreement with His word.
The Power of Words and Your Testimony
In time, your words will reveal what fills your heart. What are you saying to yourself? Are you speaking words that lead to defeat, or words that strengthen your faith? Scripture says that we overcome the devil by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of our testimony (Revelation 12:11). Do not be intimidated by the size of your problem. Put your trust in the Lord, speak His truth over your situation, and believe that God will deliver you.
No matter what you are facing today, you do not have to rely on your own strength. Trust in the Lord, remember how He has helped you before, and speak His promises over your life. The God who delivered David is still faithful to deliver His people today.
