No one can fully explain the reality of God. The only way to truly know Him is through faith. Faith changes how you see your circumstances. If you are suffering, believe that God can heal you. When you trust in God, you can face what seems impossible with confidence. If you want to increase your faith in God, start with four biblical steps: read the Bible, pray consistently, overcome worry, and surround yourself with people who are strong in faith.
What is Faith?
The Bible says, “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1). The word “faith” comes from the Greek noun “pistis.” In Scripture, faith is not passive. It is active trust.
The related verb “pisteuo” means to place complete confidence in someone or something. In other words, faith is a strong conviction rooted in spiritual confidence rather than visible proof.
Another way to understand faith is to see it as the force that turns hope into reality. That is true even when you cannot yet see the outcome. Faith connects you to the spiritual realm and makes God more real to you.
As you learn to rely on God, your faith becomes the assurance that He is working on your behalf. If you want to grow your faith in God, begin with the Bible.
There are two levels of faith: little faith and great faith. Little faith asks God for small things. Great faith asks Him for what seems impossible. If you only ask for what feels manageable, your faith will not grow. Jesus said, “According to your faith, it will be done for you.”
Great Confidence Believes God Can Do Anything
Understanding what faith is leads naturally to a bigger question: how much do you really expect God to do?
Do you only ask God for help with small things you could manage on your own? Instead of praying, “God, help me pay my house note this month,” why not ask Him for something bigger? Why not ask God to pay off your mortgage?
If you want to increase your faith, bring Him requests that seem impossible from a human point of view.
The Centurion’s Faith
When you have great faith, you believe God can do anything. The Centurion in Matthew 8 showed that kind of confidence. His servant was sick, so he came to Jesus for help. Jesus said He would come and heal him. But the Centurion replied that Jesus only needed to speak a word.
He believed that was enough to heal his servant. Jesus saw his great faith. He said, “Go your way; as you have believed, so let it be done for you.” When the Centurion returned home, his servant was healed.
Pray Like God Will Answer
When you pray, do you approach God with the same confidence the Centurion showed Jesus? Do you believe God can do what you ask—and that He will do it for you? Jesus said, “Whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them” (Mark 11:24).
So when you pray, believe God has already answered. Then trust Him for the outcome.
Read the Bible to Increase Your Faith in God
Once you begin expecting more from God, you need to fill your heart and mind with truth that strengthens that expectation.
Faith Grows Through Scripture
Reading the Bible helps you know the character of God. Colossians teaches that Jesus is the exact representation of God, so if you want to understand God’s nature, study Jesus in Scripture. Jesus Himself said that knowing Him is knowing God (John 14:7).
The Bible is filled with stories that strengthen faith. As you read about the faith of others, your own faith in God grows.
The Faith of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego
In Daniel 3, three young men showed remarkable faith. King Nebuchadnezzar ordered everyone to worship an image. Anyone who refused would be thrown into a fiery furnace. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego refused to bow.
They believed God could deliver them. But even if He did not, they still would not worship the image. Because of their confidence in God, He miraculously delivered them from the fire.
Pray with Confidence to Grow Your Faith in God
As God’s Word shapes your faith, prayer becomes the way you respond to what He is teaching you.
Prayer is how you communicate with God and deepen your trust in Him. That is why the Bible tells us to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). This does not mean praying nonstop all day. It means bringing everything to God consistently and without losing heart.
As you pray, God reveals Himself more clearly. As you know Him better, your faith grows stronger.
The Pharisee and the Tax Collector
In Luke 18:9-14, two men went to the temple to pray: a Pharisee and a tax collector. The Pharisee thanked God that he was not like other people. He also listed his religious acts.
The tax collector stood at a distance, would not lift his eyes to heaven, and prayed, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner!” Scripture says God justified the tax collector but disregarded the Pharisee’s prayer.
Pray with Humility
When you pray, do not pray like the Pharisee. His words were full of self-righteousness. He listed his religious efforts, but he never confessed his need for mercy.
The tax collector took the opposite approach. He humbly acknowledged his sin and asked God for mercy. If you want to increase your faith, pray with that same humility and dependence on God.
Do Not Worry if You Want to Strengthen Your Faith
As prayer deepens your trust in God, it also quiets the fears that compete with faith.
Reading the Bible strengthens your faith, and it also helps you live free from worry. When you worry, it reveals how easily fear can take the place of trust. If you want to increase your faith in God, you must resist worry.
Jesus said in Matthew 6:34, “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for today is its own trouble.”
Your actions reveal the strength of your faith. Instead of worrying about tomorrow, remember how God has helped you in the past. People who worry stay focused on what might happen next.
God already knows what you need. Trust Him to provide for today. Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow.
Surround Yourself with Faith-filled People
Jairus and the Power of Faith-filled Voices
As you learn to resist worry, guard the voices that influence your faith. A Jewish ruler named Jairus came to Jesus because his only daughter was dying. She was twelve years old. Jesus agreed to go with him.
On the way, Jesus stopped to heal a woman who had been bleeding for twelve years. While He was still speaking, a messenger arrived from Jairus’ home with devastating news: his daughter had died. The servant said there was no need to trouble Jesus anymore.
But Jesus told Jairus, “Don’t be afraid. Just trust me, and your daughter will be fine.”
When they arrived, the house was filled with crying and loud wailing. Jesus said, “Why are you crying and making this commotion? The girl is not dead but sleeping.” The people stopped crying and began to laugh at Him.
Jesus was not moved by their response. He put everyone outside except the girl’s father, mother, and the disciples with Him. Then He took the girl by the hand and said, “Little girl, arise.” Immediately, her life returned, and she stood up.
Remove Unbelief from the Room
Do not let negative words or emotions weaken your faith. If Jesus had allowed the scorners to stay, their unbelief could have influenced Jairus and his wife. If you want to increase your faith in God, stay close to faith-filled people.
Choose people bold enough to trust God for what seems impossible. Miracles happen when two or more people stand together in faith.
