“The righteous will live by faith.”
— Romans 1:17
The righteousness of God revealed through faith is one of the central truths in Romans 1:16-17. Paul was not ashamed of the gospel because it is God’s powerful message of salvation for everyone who believes.
Through the gospel, God shows us the righteousness He provides and the faith by which we receive it. We are not made right with Him by human effort, religious performance, or personal merit. We are made right with God when we trust in His saving work through faith.
Paul understood that the gospel is not merely information about God. It is the good news that reveals God’s righteousness and His power to save. No amount of human strength, religion, or personal achievement can rescue a person from sin.
Through the gospel, God graciously brings people into a right relationship with Him. It teaches us how to walk by faith and not by sight. It also shows His desire for humanity to live according to His will.
This is why Paul connects the gospel, salvation, and righteousness so closely in Romans 1:16-17.
Righteousness of God Revealed Through Faith in Romans 1:16-17
Humanity stands condemned before God and is helpless apart from Him. Yet God has given us the precious gift of faith. We receive His righteousness by trusting Him.
The Bible teaches that faith comes by hearing the Word of God. That is why every soul should turn to Scripture and receive the truth God has revealed.
We can only be made right with God through the righteousness provided by Christ. The Bible teaches that Christ became sin for us so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him (2 Corinthians 5:21).
Without the sacrifice of Christ, we would be helpless, without hope, and condemned before God. Human effort alone cannot overcome this standing of condemnation.
Only through God’s gracious provision, revealed in the gospel, can people receive the righteousness required for godly living.
You can receive the gift of God’s righteousness today. Turn to Him in repentance and faith, and ask Him to make His home in your heart. You might pray, “Lord, I repent of my sins. Come into my heart and live with me. I accept Your gift of righteousness, and I give You my burden of sin.”
Dear God, thank You for giving Your Son for me. Your Word says that He who knew no sin became sin for me so that I could become the righteousness of God in Him. Help me receive this gift with faith and live each day trusting in You. Amen.
