How to Live Righteously in Troubled Times

We must learn how to live righteously in troubled times. Our world is deeply overshadowed by darkness, and many hearts have been drawn away from the Lord. So often, we are tempted to live by common sense rather than by faith. Yet even in a lawless world, God still calls His people to walk in righteousness. More than two thousand years ago, Scripture lovingly prepared us for what life in the last days would be like. The Amplified Bible says it this way:

A Warning for the Times We Live In

In 2 Timothy 3:1-5, Paul tenderly reminds us that the last days will be difficult because many hearts will turn away from God. People will become consumed with themselves, hardened in love, careless about what is right, and drawn more to pleasure than to the Lord. Some will still appear godly on the outside. However, their lives will reveal that they have not surrendered to the transforming power of God. This passage is both a warning and a call for us to stay close to the Lord. It encourages us to guard our hearts and not let the spirit of this age shape who we become.

These verses warn us about the evil that is coming upon the world. They prepare this generation for the darkness and immorality that have already spread. Even so, it is still possible to live righteously in these troubled times. This is at the heart of Christian living in difficult times. The Holy Spirit wants us to know that God has given us the grace to live righteously, even in these evil days.

What Does It Mean to Live Righteously?

To live righteously is to walk in a way that honors the Lord. Righteous living begins with renewing your mind and allowing your life to reflect your relationship with Him. It means choosing what is right, even when no one else sees. It also means doing what is right when it would be easier to do otherwise. Sometimes, that looks simple and ordinary, like returning extra change a cashier gave you by mistake. Or, it can be speaking up for someone who is being treated unfairly. Yet these quiet choices reveal a heart that desires to please God.

A Simple Picture of Everyday Righteousness

My wife dislikes it when I wash my hands in the kitchen sink after working outside. Over time, I have learned that even small choices can become opportunities to do what is right. One day, after edging the lawn under the hot sun, I came inside thirsty and ready for something cold to drink. I was home alone. In that ordinary moment, I faced a small decision that quietly tested my heart.

I usually wash my hands before opening the refrigerator, but this time I thought, “What would it matter? No one is going to know.” Just as I reached for the handle, I heard a quiet voice within say, “Wash your hands.” In that moment, I knew the Lord was gently reminding me to choose what was right, so I stepped over to the sink and washed them. It may seem like a small thing. However, often our love for God is revealed in simple moments of quiet obedience.

The Holy Spirit Helps Us Live Godly Lives

In the busyness of life, it is easy to take shortcuts, but shortcuts can quietly pull our hearts away from the path God has set before us. Scientists say many people get lost in the woods because they end up walking in circles. Over time, even small differences in their steps cause them to drift off course. That is why hikers carry a compass to help them stay in the right direction. In much the same way, we need the Lord’s guidance to keep us on the path of righteousness. The Holy Spirit is our faithful compass. He gently leads us, corrects us, and helps us remain on the road to godliness.

If you feel like you have drifted off course, do not lose heart. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you. He is our Helper, and He lovingly leads us back when we begin to wander. Jesus said, “The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you” (John 14:26). These truly are troubling times, but we do not have to live troubled within. The world may be full of darkness. Still, the One who lives in us is greater than the one who is in the world. As we stay close to the Lord, the Holy Spirit strengthens us to live righteously in troubled times.

Guard Your Heart

“Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.”
— Proverbs 4:23

The New Living Translation puts it this way:

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.”
— Proverbs 4:23

Have you ever wondered how a large ship can stay afloat in the water? It remains above the waves because the water stays on the outside. The moment water gets into the hull, the ship begins to sink. In the same way, we must guard our hearts and not let the troubles of this world settle deep within us. The enemy would love for fear, bitterness, and discouragement to fill our inner lives. However, the Lord calls us to remain anchored in Him. One wise way to protect your heart is to run away from evil and anything that pulls you away from His peace.

Scripture tells us to keep our hearts pure above all else because what takes root within us will shape the course of our lives. So do not let negative voices define your character. When criticism comes, lift your head and stay steady in the Lord. When people wound you, resist the temptation to become bitter. If bitterness is planted in the heart, it will one day bear bitter fruit. But if you let God’s truth, peace, and love take root within you, your life will begin to reflect His grace more and more.

Receiving the Gift of Righteousness

The Bible says we are made righteous by our faith in Jesus Christ, not by our works. Are you working or believing? Scripture does not say Abraham obeyed God or worshiped God to become righteous. It says Abraham believed God, and God declared him righteous (Romans 4:3). The turning point for Abraham was when he entered into what God was doing for him. It was not what he did for God.

Are you trying to become righteous by your own efforts? Instead of striving to be virtuous in your own strength, begin believing what God says about you. Scripture says, “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:21). So stop listening to the voice of the enemy and start believing the truth of who you are in Christ.

I pray that the Lord will give you the grace you need to live righteously and be an overcomer in these troubled times. Living righteously in troubled times is possible when you trust God, follow the Holy Spirit, and guard your heart. May the Lord cause you to increase and abound in love. May He establish your heart blameless in holiness and strengthen you to live righteously before the Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Beverley says:

Similar to Abraham, it is our firm belief in God that makes us righteous. Without faith it is impossible to please God. Powerful reminder. Thank you.
