First Fruits of the Spirit and the Believer’s Hope

Featured Post Image - First Fruits of the Spirit and the Believer’s Hope

The first fruits of the Spirit in Romans 8 describe the believer’s present experience of grace and the future hope promised in Christ. Through the Holy Spirit, God gives repentance, faith, hope, and love as the first evidence of new life in Him. These gifts are a foretaste of the glory to come. They assure us that the same Spirit who made us new will bring us into the full joy of adoption. Furthermore, He will bring us the redemption of our bodies when Christ returns.

Throughout Scripture, the first fruits are holy to the Lord. Just as Israel tasted the first fruits of Canaan when the spies returned (Numbers 13:23-27), believers taste God’s blessings now through the Holy Spirit. These gifts stir a deep longing for Christ’s return and the redemption of our bodies. They also stir longing for the fullness of our inheritance. We already know the Spirit of adoption. When Christ returns, we will enter that fullness and live with Him forever (Philippians 3:20-21).

First Fruits of the Spirit and Holiness

Know that you are holy to God, and because Christ rose from the grave, you can wait with hope. As Romans 8:24 reminds us, “we are saved by hope”—the blessed hope of the appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ (Titus 2:13). Do not lose heart in suffering. Today’s pain is temporary and will give way to eternal glory.

You are among the first fruits, and God has already given you grace in Christ. Let that grace stir a deeper hunger for more of Him. Seek greater consecration, and our Lord Jesus will graciously provide it. He can do exceedingly abundantly above all that you ask or think.

How Does the Spirit Set Us Apart?

We are set apart first by the sacrifice of Christ. Jesus gave Himself to make His people holy, washing away our guilt and bringing us near to God. We do not make ourselves holy by our own strength. We are sanctified through His finished work and counted as God’s own because of His grace. This is why every believer can say with confidence that he belongs to the Lord.

We are also set apart by the Holy Spirit, who dwells in us and forms the life of Christ within us. He turns our hearts from sin and teaches us to love what is true. Moreover, He leads us in the way of obedience. As the Spirit works in us, our lives begin to reflect the holiness God has already declared over us in Christ. Sanctification is, therefore, both a gift we receive and a grace that continues to grow in us.

God also sets us apart through His truth. His Word renews our minds, exposes our sin, and teaches us to walk in a manner worthy of Christ. As we abide in His truth, we are shaped more and more into His likeness. So to be set apart is not only to belong to God. It is also to be steadily transformed by His Word, His Spirit, and His grace.
