The passage calls us to prepare our hearts for the Lord. We make room for Him to lead us on a straight path. It reminds us that God can lift what is low, bring down what stands in the way, straighten what has become crooked, and smooth what has been rough. Then everyone may see the salvation He brings (Luke 3:4-6).

John the Baptist prepared the way of the Lord by calling people to repentance. Repentance is a change of heart and mind that turns us toward God.

In the same way, we become ready to see God move when we lay aside false views of Him, surrender our pride, and respond to His voice.

God is faithful to keep His promises and make a way for us, but He also calls us to renew our minds about who He is.

Repentance is not only turning from sin; it is also a change of heart and mind that brings us into agreement with God’s truth.

As you reflect on the four images in Luke 3:4-6, ask the Lord to prepare your heart and make a way for you in every situation.

1. Lift the Valleys of Despair

Prepare a way for the Lord by renewing your thoughts about who He is. God is not a harsh taskmaster waiting for you to fail. He is gracious, patient, and full of mercy.

His grace strengthens you in weakness, equips you for what He asks of you, and lifts you when discouragement runs deep.

That is why we must lift every valley of despair and reject low, hopeless thoughts about our loving Father. Even sincere believers can wrestle with doubt. Ask the Lord to help your unbelief and deepen your trust.

As you humble yourself before Him, His grace will meet you in the low places and give you strength to keep going because God will make a way.

2. Bring Down the Mountains of Pride

One of the greatest barriers in the spiritual life is pride. It can keep us self-reliant, defensive, and resistant to the Lord’s work in our hearts. When we humble ourselves before God, we make room for His wisdom, His help, and His transforming grace.

Scripture reminds us that pride leads to disgrace, but humility opens the way to wisdom. If we humble ourselves and pray, God is faithful to meet us with mercy, forgiveness, and restoration. The path clears when we stop exalting ourselves and begin trusting Him fully.

The Lord draws near to the humble and revives the repentant heart. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any pride that needs to be surrendered. Choose humility in its place.

As your heart softens before God, you will be more ready to receive His direction and see Him make a way.

3. Straighten What Has Been Crooked

Faith grows over time, but it must be directed toward God with steadiness and purpose. When your heart feels conflicted or uncertain, ask the Lord to straighten what has been twisted by fear, disappointment, or double-mindedness.

He can bring clarity where confusion has lingered.

We can believe that the Lord will make a way because He has already shown His faithfulness in Christ. He redeems what was broken, forgives what was sinful, and straightens what has gone astray.

As you trust Him, He will align your steps with His truth and lead you forward, showing you that God will make a way.

4. Smooth the Rough Places

The Lord has made rough places smooth through His mercy and redeeming love. Because He has forgiven us and set us free, we are called to remove the stumbling blocks that harden our hearts.

Surrender sin, bitterness, and resistance to Him. Let your life become a clear path for His work.

Trusting God’s Provision When the Way Feels Closed

Philippians 4:19 says, “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”

This is a promise we can hold onto. Through Christ, God gives us the grace to do what is good, and through Christ, we can trust Him to provide what we need.
