“God knows your hearts.”
— Luke 16:15

In the Parable of the Unjust Servant, fellow workers brought accusations against an employee of a rich man. This led to his dismissal. Jesus went on to explain how the fired employee made friends with his employer’s debtors. He collected some of the debt owed to him. In the end, the owner commended the unjust employee for his shrewdness. This story illustrates that while people judge actions, the divine understanding is that God truly knows your heart and its true intentions.

In the parable, Jesus stated, “No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.” Essentially, Jesus was conveying that individuals must choose between placing their trust in God or in their wealth. It is important to remember that He is aware of the intentions of our hearts in this decision. Indeed, God discerns the motivations behind our actions, knowing our hearts as no one else does.

The Pharisees, consumed by their love for money, rejected Jesus’s message when he shared the parable. They sneered at Jesus because they saw Him as a poor man being followed by other poor men and yet having the nerve to teach about money. God knows the hearts of people. He is not impressed with their outward appearances or their wealth.

God Sees the Soul

Though the Pharisees justified themselves, they didn’t know that God, who judges the soul, would be the ultimate Judge. The Pharisees misunderstood the blessings of God’s covenant. They suffered from a profound identity crisis. They sought to align themselves with a God they had never truly known. While God had chosen them, connecting them to Himself through Abraham’s lineage, their lack of faith created a chasm. This disconnect serves as a reminder that appearances can be misleading; God, however, sees beyond the surface, possessing insight into our hearts and authentic faith. Ultimately, He understands us far better than anyone else because God knows what’s in our hearts.

God knows your heart because He created you. Don’t become like the Pharisees of Jesus’ day who turned their hearts from God to serve money. They apparently assumed that their wealth was God’s blessing in return for their righteous conduct. They completely neglected the fact that many righteous people in the Old Testament lacked material things, while many unrighteous people had plenty. Remember that God sees your heart. Your faith in Jesus Christ justifies you, not the show of God’s blessings on your life.

Dear God, help me to maintain a clean heart, one that worships You.

Amen 🙌 God truly sees beyond appearances and knows our hearts. May He keep mine pure and focused on Him alone.
