To remain steady in the storm, look to Jesus. He got into a boat with His disciples and said, “Let us cross over to the other side of the lake.” As they sailed, He fell asleep. Suddenly, a violent storm struck. The boat began to fill with water.
Terrified, the disciples woke Him and cried out in fear. But Jesus remained steady in the storm. He rose, rebuked the wind and the waves, and there was a great calm. Then He asked them, “Where is your faith?”
When Trouble Comes Without Warning
When we think of storms, we picture weather. But some storms have nothing to do with the forecast. They are the storms of life—unexpected trials that disrupt your peace and change everything in a moment.
Losing a job, suffering an accident, or grieving a loved one are all storms of life. This is where trusting God in the storm becomes essential.
Trusting God When Fear Rises
The disciples thought they knew who Jesus was. They had seen His power at work for others, but not yet in their own storm. Sooner or later, everyone faces the storms of life. Perhaps you are in one right now.
If you want to fulfill God’s purpose for your life, you must trust God. When you do, He will be your comfort in the storm.
Storms of Life: Why God Allows Them
Storms do not happen without purpose. Nature’s storms can cool the air and replenish the earth with water. In the same way, the storms of life can test your faith. They can strengthen your resolve and reveal where you need God most.
Once you understand that storms can serve a purpose, you can face life’s challenges with greater wisdom and readiness.
Your lake is whatever stands between you and God’s purpose for your life. It may be addiction, depression, lack, or sickness. Whatever your lake is, trust God and remain steady in the storm. He will bring you through it and lead you into your purpose.
The Power Behind the Storm
Yet not every storm is simply a test of faith. We are also in spiritual warfare. Our struggle is not against flesh and blood. It is against unseen spirits of darkness.
People often turn against one another, but evil spirits work together with one aim—to destroy. That is why we must discern the battle behind the storm.
Science explains the mechanics of storms like hurricanes, typhoons, and windstorms. But Scripture reveals the spiritual battle behind many of life’s storms. The Bible calls Satan the prince of the power of the air (Ephesians 2:2).
In Luke 8:23, the windstorm sought to distract Jesus from His mission. He was on His way to set a demon-possessed man free. But Jesus remained steady in the storm, rebuked the wind and the sea, and brought great calm.
People do not usually rebuke the weather. But Jesus did because He understood the power behind the storm. When He rebuked it, He confronted the one who stirred it—Satan.
That is why spiritual discernment matters when you are facing life’s storms.
Trusting God in the Storm
When the storm ended, Jesus and the disciples arrived in the region of the Gadarenes. As soon as He stepped out of the boat, a demon-possessed man came to meet Him. He had lived among the tombs for a long time, isolated and tormented. But Jesus stayed focused on His purpose. He had come to set the man free.
When God begins to move in your life, not everyone will respond with faith. That is why you cannot build your peace on other people’s approval. You must know who your God is.
The moment you turn to Jesus, opposition often rises. So do not get distracted by what others are doing. Consider the Rock and stay focused on your purpose, even after the storm. If you remain focused, God will renew your spirit.
When Jesus Feels Silent
You may be facing the storm of your life, but do not lose heart—Jesus is with you. Scripture says He will never leave you or forsake you, so remember God’s promises.
Yet in the storm, it may feel as if He is absent. Fear rises, the pressure intensifies, and you cry out, “Lord, where are You?”
It may seem that God does not care, but He is in the boat with you. God is our present help in trouble, and He can use storms to increase your faith.
If you remain steady in the storm, trusting God when defeat seems certain, He will bring you through. He will strengthen your faith and lead you into His purpose.
