A Story of Biblical Deliverance
How God broke my addiction is not just a story of survival—it is my testimony of how Jesus met me in darkness and delivered me from death. In Mark 5:1-20, Jesus met a man who seemed beyond help: tormented, isolated, and living among the tombs. Yet when Jesus stepped in, death did not get the final word.
His story speaks to anyone who has felt trapped, ashamed, or too far gone for mercy. People had chained him again and again, but something deeper held him captive—something only Jesus could break.
After delivering him, Jesus gave him a simple command: go home and tell what great things the Lord had done, and how He had shown compassion.
That command reaches deep into my own story. If not for God’s grace, I would have died a prisoner of drug addiction. But God met me in my darkness, broke the chains, and brought me back from death.
This testimony is my way of obeying that call. It is the story of how God broke my addiction and how Jesus broke the chains of my 13-year drug addiction.
Spiritual Bondage in Addiction
When addiction had me bound, I felt like the Gadarene man—lost, trapped, and certain death was near. I could not trust myself to save myself.
The people around me were just as lost. Their glazed eyes mirrored my despair, and I felt caught in a cycle of addiction that robbed me of hope.
I wanted to be free, but each day blurred into the next. Every promise to quit eventually broke, and crack cocaine proved stronger than my will.
My Christian Addiction Testimony
After 13 years of addiction to crack cocaine, my body grew weaker, and my choices weighed heavily on me.
The person I once was felt farther away each day. I was isolated, ashamed, and afraid of where my addiction was leading me.
At last, I knew I needed help beyond myself. If I kept chasing that little white stone, death would be the inevitable end of me.
That night, I opened the Bible and searched for God. It opened to Psalm 116, and the words felt like they had been written for the very place I was in.
I loved the Lord because He heard my cry and paid attention to my prayer. Since He listened to me, I knew I could keep calling on Him for the rest of my life. Death felt like it had surrounded me, and pain had wrapped around me like chains. In my deepest distress, I called out to the Lord and begged Him to spare my life (Psalm 116:1-4).
Those verses felt alive to me. I was hurting, afraid, and sure I was near death—so I prayed. The Lord heard my plea for deliverance, and hope began to rise.
Faith and Addiction Recovery Through God’s Word
By then, my heart was weary, my body exhausted, and my spirit nearly empty. Still, something deep within me longed to be delivered from addiction’s grip.
In that haze, I began whispering silent prayers—a last reach beyond my brokenness.
God was already drawing me toward His Word, planting a seed of hope and preparing me for the night everything would begin to change.
As I sat with the open Bible in my lap, Psalm 116 seemed to speak directly into my pain.
In those ancient words, I realized I was not alone. The God who delivered the psalmist was offering grace to me, too.
Scripture became a lifeline, and that lifeline led me to cry out to God in prayer.
Jesus Broke My Chains and Brought Freedom
That evening, the whisper became a cry. In my dark living room, I walked around the lone oak coffee table, tears falling as a song rose from my spirit.
The words were simple: “Make me a man like Joshua, Jesus, make me a man like him.” With each trembling step, that song became my prayer for courage, faith, and deliverance.
For the first time, I admitted I was powerless to help myself. I cried out, “Lord, please save me—I can’t do this anymore.” That prayer opened the door to the peace only He could give.
Peace, Freedom, and Divine Intervention
The silence that followed felt heavy, yet a glimmer of hope remained. I remembered the psalmist’s words: “I love you, Lord! You answered my prayers.”
As I surrendered my fear and pain to God, peace settled over me—soft but undeniable, replacing the panic that had consumed me.
That night, Jesus, the chain breaker, broke the chains that had bound me for 13 years. The storm within me calmed, and I knew God had delivered me from death by crack cocaine.
Calling out to God became the beginning of a new life. I did not have polished words or perfect faith—only a broken heart, a desperate cry, and a small measure of hope.
Looking back, I know this is how God broke my addiction: He reached into the place where I thought my life was over, broke addiction’s grip, and pulled me back from death. No person, plan, or promise had been able to do that for me. Only Jesus could.
Now faith shapes the life I once thought I had destroyed. Like the man Jesus delivered in Mark 5, I am telling what the Lord has done for me.
Deliverance was not just a single powerful moment; it marked the beginning of an ongoing transformation. Day by day, God teaches me to walk in the freedom He gave me.
If something has you bound, do not believe the lie that your story is over. You are not too broken or too far gone for God’s mercy. Cry out to the Lord right where you are—Jesus can still break chains and bring life beyond addiction, shame, and despair.

Conclusion
My story is not about the strength I found in myself, but the mercy I found in Jesus. He met me in darkness, broke what I could not break, and gave me a life I thought was gone. This is how God broke my addiction—and if He did it for me, He can still do it for anyone who calls on Him.

Yessss! He’s a Way Maker!! Have you ever heard that song?
Yes, I am familiar with “Way Maker” by Sinach and Leeland.
I’ve heard the Brooklyn Tabernacle choir sing it!
It is a great song–a reminder that God is “a way maker.”
Yessss!
Powerful and humbling, Brother. This is a true testimony of God’s Grace, Mercy, and Deliverance.
Chains still break when we cry out to Jesus. Thank you for boldly sharing what the Lord has done. 🙏
Thank you, my brother. It is truly humbling to experience firsthand, the grace and mercy of God. I want everyone to know that the Lord can deliver from death because He has conquered death. To experience deliverance, we need only to ask, and the Lord will show up in your darkness, whatever it may be.
He is closer than we sometimes realize, ready to reach out and lift us from despair into hope. When we call on Him, even in moments of fear and uncertainty, His presence brings peace that surpasses understanding. Let this be an encouragement: no situation is too hopeless, and no night too dark for the light of His love to break through. Trust in His promises, and you will find strength and comfort beyond what you could imagine. The Lord desires to restore, heal, and lead us into a new day filled with purpose and joy.
What stayed with me was not only the moment of deliverance, but the honesty of the darkness that came before it—the exhaustion, the silence, and the surrender that made room for grace. Thank you for bearing witness to a journey where hope was found not through strength, but through letting go.
Thank you for reading my testimony. It was in my weakness, that I found strength. I sought the Lord; He heard, and He answered. For that, I am eternally grateful.
