Lamentations 3:22-23
“Because of the Lord’s great love, we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

Jeremiah turned from contemplating his misery to remembering God’s mercy. He still experienced pain and sorrow. However, he also recalled the faithfulness of the Lord, which gave him hope. The realization of God’s mercy, compassion, and faithfulness generated hope in Jeremiah’s soul. His contemplation of trouble became a confession of faith. Jeremiah understood that God’s mercy is new every morning. Because the Lord loves us, He chastens us (Hebrews 12:5-11). Yet, He does not consume us; He disciplines, but He does not destroy us.

All things work together for good for those who love God. That’s because God gives us new grace every morning. Unbelief causes us to view God through our circumstances, and this creates hopelessness. However, faith enables us to look at our circumstances through the reality of God, giving us hope. Looking at ourselves makes us depressed. Examining our circumstances can be distressing. But looking at the Lord makes us blessed and highly favored.

The best thing we can do every day is to wait patiently and silently for the Lord to work and accomplish His will in our lives in His time. Despite life’s challenges, remember that God’s mercy is new every morning, filled with compassion. God is gracious. He is great in faithfulness, and God is good no matter how we feel or what we see. Many people wait for God as if they were waiting at a bus stop. Yet, God is waiting for us. It is not enough to sit and wait; we must also seek the Lord and draw closer to Him. His grace is new every morning.

Today Is A New Day

Because the Lord gives us mercy, life does not consume us intellectually. Consider the trouble all around us. Life does not consume us bodily because the Lord’s mercy is new every morning. This is important when we consider the wear and tear of our brain, the continual evolution of our thoughts, and the daily anxiety of the mind.

Despite all this, the all-renewing energy of the Holy Spirit gives us strength anew every morning. This spirit repairs the waste of our faculties and renews the resources of power. One crucial reason life doesn’t consume us morally is that God’s mercy is fresh every morning. This counters our sins, daily provocations, and heart’s obduracy.

To know what mercy is, consider what consumption means. Assess a diseased tree at the roots, a daffy man pining away, a soul wasting! From such consumption, there is no protection but God’s mercy. Remember that God is always with you. Human preservation is not merely a question of science or prudence. Underlying all are the compassions of God, for they are new every morning.


Lord, I am truly thankful for the revitalizing power of the Holy Spirit. It gives me renewed strength and grace each morning.
