Second Chance   

“The Lord will save me,
     and we will sing with stringed instruments
all the days of our lives
     in the temple of the Lord.”

Hezekiah’s Story of Hope

If you were ill and near death, what would you do to be healed? Isaiah 38:20 tells us that Hezekiah faced that moment. The prophet Isaiah delivered a sobering message from the Lord: “Put your house in order; you are going to die; you will not recover.” Imagine receiving such a difficult word from God. In times like these, many people discover that God is truly the god of second chances. What would you do?

Hezekiah did not hesitate. He turned his face to the wall and poured out his heart to the Lord, pleading for mercy. His tears did not go unheard. The Lord sent Isaiah back with a new message: Hezekiah would receive fifteen more years of life. God responded with compassion and granted him a gracious reprieve.

God Gives New Life

Hezekiah had every reason to celebrate. The Lord had spared him from death. God also restored his strength.

This unexpected turn of events filled Hezekiah with gratitude and amazement. God had answered his prayer and brought healing to his body.

The Bible does not tell us everything Hezekiah did during those additional fifteen years. Even so, it is easy to imagine that he lived with a fresh sense of purpose. God’s grace forever marked him.

Maybe you are facing a desperate need. Maybe you are carrying a heavy burden or praying through a difficult illness. Do not lose heart.

Take courage and bring your request to God with a sincere heart. Hezekiah’s story reminds us that our God is the God of second chances.

As you approach Him in faith, be thankful. He can change the course of your life and fill your heart with restored hope.

Heavenly Father, I know I have not lived a perfect life. Thank You for Your mercy, for hearing my prayers, and for the fresh starts You have graciously given me. Help me trust You with every need and live with renewed hope in Your grace. Amen.
