The Lord is our refuge and fortress. In Psalm 91:2, we read, “I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him, I will trust.” What does it mean for God to be our refuge and fortress? A refuge is a place of safety and protection, a shelter that we can run to in times of trouble. A fortress is a stronghold, a place of defense and security. Is your shelter strong enough? You must know that God can deliver you even in your greatest perplexities. This is the kind of faith that God expects you to have in Him: faith that speaks His word to our situation.
“We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed, but we are perplexed, but not in despair, persecuted, but not forsaken, struck down, but not destroyed”
— 2 Corinthians 4:8-9
Living in the twenty-first century often leaves us feeling uncertain about many things. Although the enemy attacks us from every side, we are not defeated because the Lord is our refuge and our fortress.
The Lord Is Our Defense
The state of the world today can be bewildering, but do not be discouraged. In these trying times, the Lord stands as our steadfast refuge and fortress. He is our escape from the evil and lies that plague us all day. You must be aware that Satan is your adversary. He persecutes and accuses you before God. But regardless of the adverse circumstances the devil creates, we will never be without hope. We will remain at peace because the Lord is our refuge, and our confidence is in Him.
Don’t walk around today with a sad face, for God has not forsaken you. The Lord is your refuge and fortress. Your fight is with the rulers, authorities, and cosmic powers over this present darkness. Your fight is with the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Above all, remember that Jesus has disarmed them. He has put them to shame by triumphing over them at the cross.
Help me walk in faith, dear Lord, for You are my stronghold, and You remain my faithful God. Even in my greatest perplexities, I am determined to trust You. I know You will deliver me from my troubles. That is why I place all my hope and trust in You. Help me overcome the anxieties and disparities that I face. Today, I will say of the Lord, “You are my refuge and my fortress, my God; in You I will trust.” The Lord is indeed our refuge and fortress, sheltering us always.
