Overwhelmed in Spirit

From the end of the earth I call to You, when my heart is overwhelmed and weak;
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I [a rock that is too high to reach without Your help].

Most people know what it is to be overwhelmed in spirit; to be emptied as when one drinks from a cup. That’s when you should use your faith and run to the Rock. Often, sin will spew up the dust of my past, overwhelming me with the weight of my imperfections. There are times when problem after problem engulfs me, and I feel the emotional pain of heartbreak and the discontentment of disappointment. Tossed around by the winds of life, I am soon overwhelmed in spirit, and I find myself living in the past. But when I reflect on the psalmist’s words in Psalm 61:2, I turn to the Rock, which is higher than I.

Thank God that these things are only seasons; seasons change. So, in such seasons, when overwhelmed, remember that we have a God who is all-sufficient. He sits high and looks low. His ways are higher than our ways, and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts. His compassion and mercy are higher than our sins. We must say of the Lord, “He is the Rock which is higher than I.”

When your heart is overwhelmed

Life has programmed us to put our trust in things lower than ourselves. But we must fix our confidence in our high and glorious Lord. He is our Rock, and He does not change. He is our high Rock, which shelters us from life’s floods. The floods do not bother our God; He rules them as He wills.

Jesus is the Rock that Moses struck to quench the people’s thirst. He is the Rock that David hurled at Goliath, the giant, forever ending his threats. Have faith in the Rock. When overwhelmed in spirit, go to Jesus; when you thirst for living water, go to Jesus. What is your Goliath? Is it your finances, self-esteem, or illness? Whatever seems too big to overcome, put it under Jesus’ feet. Jesus is the Rock that is higher than all. He is the Rock, which is higher than I.
