A man prepared a great banquet and invited many guests. This parable is often referred to as God’s banquet invitation. When everything was ready, he sent his servant to tell them to come. But one by one, the guests made excuses. One had bought a field, another needed to test his oxen, and another had just gotten married.
In this parable, God’s banquet invitation is extended to many. Yet some miss it because everyday concerns become more important than accepting His call.
When the servant returned with their excuses, the master became angry. He told the servant to bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame from the streets and alleys. After that, there was still room. So the master sent the servant to the roads and country lanes to invite even more people, so his house would be full. Those who first rejected the invitation would not share in the banquet (Luke 14:15-24 ERV).
This parable shows how far God’s grace reaches and how wide His invitation truly is.
The Invitation Is for Everyone
The “certain man” in this parable is God. The servant is Jesus. The invited guests represent the world.
Everyone who believes in the Lord Jesus Christ should help call others to God’s table. In effect, we are sharing His invitation with others.
Originally, God invited Abraham’s children. When they made excuses and refused, the master asked the poor, crippled, blind, and lame to come to the feast.
Then the master invited those outside the city. These were people outside the Jewish faith: the Gentiles. Truly, God has opened His table to all nations.
Come While There Is Still Room
Let us be thankful that God included Gentiles, like you and me, to feast on His goodness. We do not have to wait until the end of the age to experience the fullness of God’s glory.
The banquet is happening now. God is extending grace to all who will accept it. Come, and eat your fill today!
Everything your soul needs is found at God’s table. There is healing at the table, peace at the table, and joy at the banquet table of our God.
Accept God’s invitation of salvation today. There is still room for you at the table. Will you accept His call?
