Your people settled in it,
and from your bounty, God, you provided for the poor.
— Psalm 68:10

We often skirt around the word “poor,” and we are especially hesitant to use this term when referring to people. Instead of “poor families” or “poor people,” we might say “low-income families” or “underprivileged people.” However, God doesn’t mince words, and God provides for them. But regardless of how we choose to label them, the poor remain poor.

To be poor is to lack. We all have strengths and weaknesses. If we are weak, it is because we lack something. Our heavenly Father anticipates our needs, and He includes the poor. Out of the abundance of riches which He has stored up in Christ, God provides for those who have lack (Philippians 4:19 ESV).

We must stand in the gap for the poor. The scriptures remind us, “For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.” (Matthew 25:35-36 NIV) This selfless care extends beyond material needs, nourishing our souls and reminding us that god provides compassion unwaveringly.

Poor in Goods, Rich in Faith

Though poor in this world’s goods, the poor are rich in a greater sense. That’s because they have faith in God and recognize Him as their Savior. In this sinful world, that is a more valuable possession than wheelbarrows of silver or gold. Anyone who has faith has all that is truly needful in this life and the next.

God Promised to Supply All Your Needs

As you walk through seasons of scarcity or emotional heaviness, remember that God’s provision is not limited by circumstance. God provides and meets every need with grace, often in ways we least expect, transforming hardship into hope. When we open our hearts and trust in His faithfulness, we discover that His care is both personal and abundant—reaching beyond our immediate concerns to assure us of His steadfast love. In moments of doubt or longing, let His promises renew your spirit, knowing that restoration and blessing await those who turn to Him with expectant faith.

Heavenly Father, I acknowledge You as my source of provision in areas where I have insufficiency. Thank you for being so gracious.
