Opened Eyes

“Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him.”
— Luke 24:31

To see Jesus as He truly is, our eyes must be opened. The Lord may be near, yet we may not recognize Him. That is what happened to two disciples on the road to Emmaus. They were leaving Jerusalem when Jesus drew near.

Their story is recorded in Luke 24:13–35. It reminds us that Jesus opens our eyes to Scripture, to His presence, and to the truth we need most.

Walking Without Understanding

Jesus had just been crucified, and the disciples were grieving. They had hoped He would redeem Israel. Instead, His death left them confused and discouraged. Their eyes were not yet opened to the fullness of God’s plan.

As they walked, they talked about all that had happened. While they were speaking, Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. He asked, “What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you walk and are sad?”

They answered with surprise. Was He the only stranger in Jerusalem who had not heard what happened?

The disciples did not yet understand Jesus’ death. They may have been thinking about Old Testament prophecies. They may also have been trying to remember what Jesus had taught them about the Messiah. Still, they could not make sense of it on their own.

No doubt they wondered why Jesus had to die. They also wondered what future remained for Israel under Roman oppression. Their questions were honest, but their understanding was still incomplete.

When Jesus Opens Our Eyes to Scripture

As they walked together, Jesus listened to their concerns and questions. They did not know it was Him. Then He began to open the Scriptures. He showed them how the Messiah’s suffering and death fulfilled God’s promises.

The words of the prophets had once seemed mysterious and confusing. Under His teaching, they began to make sense. Their hearts burned within them as He spoke. Still, they did not realize Jesus Himself was walking beside them.

Recognizing Him Beside Us

Those two disciples walked beside Jesus, yet they failed to recognize Him. We can miss His presence in our daily lives, too. We need Him to reveal Himself to us.

Only Jesus can open our spiritual eyes. He makes Scripture come alive with meaning. Then we begin to notice the Lord’s guidance, comfort, and love in ways we had not seen before.

Spiritual Understanding by His Light

We may think we understand, but true spiritual understanding comes only when Jesus reveals the truth. Our insight is limited. His light gives clarity.

As we rely on Him, He gives us healthy eyes. He corrects our misconceptions and lights the path ahead. When Jesus opens our eyes, we recognize His presence, trust His Word, and see God’s faithfulness more clearly.
