In the 1970s and ’80s, I was a keyboardist in a rhythm and blues band. I co-wrote and produced a record for a friend, David Rivet, a/k/a ‘the Bionic I (One)’. That song, “DISCO CLAUS,” became one of my favorites. Disco Claus hits home with my family during the Christmas season. Partly, this is because my son, Eric, is directing the children in the chorus on the recording session. He was 5 years old.

Disco Claus is a collaboration between Eric Dunbar and David Lee Rivet. The two co-authored more than thirty songs together and worked in recording studios in the New Orleans area in the 1970s and ’80s. “Disco Claus” is a Christmas song, written for children, during the disco era. David portrays the part of a disco happy Santa Claus. He spreads happiness to the world with his magic dust.

Christmas Joy

When I look back, those moments in the studio are some of my fondest memories. They were filled with laughter and a genuine sense of togetherness. The blend of funky keyboards and joyful voices captured the spirit of the disco era. Additionally, David Rivet’s lively performance as a 1980s disco-inspired version of Santa Claus made the recording unforgettable. Over the years, “Disco Claus” has become a cherished tradition for us. It echoes joy every December and reminds me of the magic music brings to families and friends alike.

Today, Eric is an accomplished pianist, songwriter, producer, and music instructor. His professional name is “Cire Nicholas.”

Over the years, I’ve come to appreciate how “Disco Claus” has become a part of our family’s holiday celebrations. When it resurfaces each season, it sparks nostalgia and laughter. The infectious groove and playful lyrics invite everyone—young and old—to let loose and dance, as we did back in the studio. Even now, when I hear those opening notes, I’m transported to that vibrant time. It’s all about embracing the energy of the disco era. When I listen to it, I feel surrounded by friends, family, and the unmistakable energy of disco. Sharing this song has become a heartfelt way to connect with new generations. It passes along the joy and musical spirit that first inspired its creation. When you hear it, I hope you will pass it on.

Disco Claus is currently taking off in Germany, thanks to Tramp Records. I hope it brings you as much joy as it gave me when we recorded it. You may listen to the song here: https://youtu.be/32ECs9j1TVg?si=b8toKkLlOwpWD4n4.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!
