“Jesus said unto them, If ye seek Me, let these go their way.”
— John 18:8
Note the care that Jesus displayed for His disciples. He gave Himself up to His captors, but not before commanding them to set His disciples free. As recorded in John 18:8–9, Jesus says, “If you seek Me, let these go their way. These words highlight Jesus’ self-sacrificial love and fulfilling His earlier promise: “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep” (John 10:11).
The Good Shepherd’s Actions
Even during His hour of trial, Jesus was not preoccupied with His own suffering. Instead, His priority was the safety and well-being of those who had followed Him. His actions exemplify why Scripture calls Him the Good Shepherd—the words at the heart of His loving role. Jesus acted this way throughout His earthly ministry. For example, He calmed storms (Mark 4:39), sought the lost (Luke 15:4), and restored the fallen (John 21:15–17). By drawing these parallels, we see how Jesus’s actions consistently embodied sacrificial protection and steadfast love.
Substitution and Redemption
Jesus willingly accepted His fate, becoming the sacrifice so that we might go free. His words, “let these go their way,” echo a powerful declaration of both substitution and redemption. In taking the place of His disciples and us, Jesus points to His ultimate mission—to lay down His life so that those who trust in Him may experience true salvation. This saving grace was foreshadowed in His teachings and fulfilled at the cross.
John 18:8 reminds us of the boundless love that Jesus shows for us. Even in His darkest hour, His concern was not for Himself, but for those He came to save. Let this assurance give you confidence and peace, knowing that our Savior cares for you deeply and intercedes on your behalf. Therefore, rejoice in the freedom and protection He has secured for you. Respond with gratitude and trust in the faithful love of the good shepherd who tends his flock.
Lord Jesus, today, I honor You as the Good Shepherd, and I give thanks for the freedom and protection You have provided. You laid down Your life for me, and for that I thank You, adore You, love You, and trust You.
