The Good Shepherd

“Jesus said unto them, If ye seek Me, let these go their way.”
— John 18:8

Notice the care Jesus displayed as the Good Shepherd for His disciples. When the soldiers came to arrest Him, Jesus willingly gave Himself up. But before they took Him, He gave a clear command: “If ye seek Me, let these go their way.”

In that moment, Jesus revealed the heart of the Good Shepherd. He stood in the place of His sheep so they could go free.

His Protective Care

Even in His hour of trial, Jesus was not focused only on His own suffering. He was also concerned for the safety of those who followed Him.

This protective love fulfills His own words: “I am the Good Shepherd: the Good Shepherd giveth His life for the sheep” (John 10:11).

Throughout His ministry, Jesus showed this same shepherd-like care. He calmed storms (Mark 4:39), sought the lost (Luke 15:4), and restored the fallen (John 21:15–17).

Again and again, His actions reveal the Good Shepherd who protects, rescues, restores, and redeems.

Substitution and Redemption

The Good Shepherd willingly accepted the path to the cross. He became the sacrifice so that we might go free.

His words, “let these go their way,” point beyond the Garden of Gethsemane. They point to the greater work of substitution and redemption.

He took our place and bore our sin. Through Him, all who trust in Him can receive true salvation.

Lord Jesus, I honor You as the Good Shepherd. Thank You for laying down Your life for Your sheep. Thank You for protecting Your people and giving freedom through Your sacrifice. Help me trust Your care, follow Your voice, and rest in the salvation You have given. Amen.

That’s how much He loves us, Willie. At calvary, Jesus laid down His life for us. Imagine that–He had you and me in mind. Thanks for reading, and commenting.
