I trust in you;
    do not let me be put to shame,
    nor let my enemies triumph over me.
—Psalms 25:2 NIV

King David gives us direction as to how we should pray in adversity. King David had no shame when it came to trusting God, and neither should we. Whenever David was in trouble, he prayed, acknowledging his trust in God first. He had a confident trust in God and believed that God would not put him to shame by letting his enemies triumph over him.

King David fought many enemies: King Saul, the Philistines, the Syrians, the Edomites, the Moabites, and even his son Absalom. Although King David was a fierce warrior, there were times when he was afraid in battle. To be assured of victory, David always asked God not to let him be put to shame, nor allow his enemies to triumph over him.

Like King David, we also fight many enemies. However, unlike King David’s enemies, our enemies are not people and ethnicities, nor are they our family members. We fight a spiritual battle, and we must fight without guilt or condemnation.

“Our fight is not against people on earth. We are fighting against the rulers and authorities and the powers of this world’s darkness. We are fighting against the spiritual powers of evil in the heavenly places.”
—Ephesians 6:12 ERV

No Condemnation

Rather than make people our enemy, we must recognize that our archenemy is Satan. He plans to overcome us with things like anxiety, depression, oppression, racism, cancer, and death. He wants to put us to shame with feelings of guilt and self-condemnation.

By faith, we have the victory, because we believe the Word of God, which says, “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1). Anyone who believes in Him will never be put to shame (Romans 10:11). Our God is trustworthy, and if we trust Him, He will not allow our enemies to triumph over us.
