Children of the Light

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
— Ephesians 5:8-10 NKJV

The Scripture did not say that we were “in the darkness,” but that we “were darkness.” But we have been delivered from the power of darkness. Now we are children of the light. Light has nothing in common with darkness. Light produces fruit, but the works of darkness are unfruitful. Ephesians 5:9 tells us that the fruit of the Spirit [“the light”] is in all goodness and righteousness and truth. Therefore, it is impossible to be in darkness and light at the same time! Because the light produces goodness, which is one manifestation of the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22).

Jesus had much to say about light and darkness, especially concerning those who walk as children of the light and strive to embody its essence.

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
— Matthew 5:16 NKJV

For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”
— John 3:20-21 NKJV

Living Lamps

Children of light are living sacrifices. Therefore, to walk as children of light means to live naked before God, not hiding anything. It’s easy to hide things from people because they can’t see our hearts and minds. However, “There is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account” (Hebrews 4:13).

Walking as children of the light also means revealing God’s light in our daily lives. By our character and conduct, we bring God’s light into a dark world. Indeed, children of the light help others find their way to Christ. The mind of the unsaved person is blinded by Satan (2 Corinthians 4:3-4) and by sin (Ephesians 4:17-19). When we witness to and share Christ with others, the light can enter, and thereby we can lead the lost out of darkness into God’s wonderful light.

Light reveals God; light produces fruit, but light also exposes what is wrong. The light reveals the truth and exposes the true character of things. This explains why an unsaved person tends to stay away from the church and the Bible. God’s light reveals our true character, and the exposure is not very complimentary. We know that our God is jealous and expects that we love Him only. Therefore, as children of the light, we refuse to fellowship with the darkness, thereby exposing the dark things of sin for what they really are.

Dear God, allow me to be a beacon of light for someone today. Empower and embolden me that I may share the light of Christ with others, and lead a lost soul out of darkness into Your marvelous light.
