I am sure you have heard the expression, “It is what it is.” You may have even used it yourself a few times. Often, people say this when they are frustrated by a situation they perceive as unchangeable. When you appear defeated, you don’t have to accept defeat. Don’t say, “Oh well, I guess it is what it is.” Don’t give in to the negative outcome. Instead, rewrite the story. See the ending you want and then write it into your story. By faith, speak to your situation. By faith, you can change what is into what you want it to be. God did this when He created the universe.
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.”
— Genesis 1:1-3
Don’t Let Uncertainty Rule
The universe was once empty. The only thing that existed was space and darkness. If God had said, “Wow, it is so dark,” nothing would have changed. If God had said, “It is what it is,” the universe would have remained dark, and you and I would not be here. Rather than speak what He saw, God spoke what He wanted to see. He wanted to see light. Therefore, speaking with faith, God called forth light. He believed that what He said would happen, and it did.
2 Corinthians 4:13 tells us that we have that same spirit of faith. Like God, we are speaking spirits. Since we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, “I believed and therefore I spoke,” we should also believe and speak. This power of faith gives us the ability to shape our reality, to change what is into what we want it to be.
We are the only species on Earth that uses words to communicate. That is because we are like Him. In Psalms 82:6, God says the children of the Most High are little gods. The Creator desires that His children rule and reign in life, and when they are confronted with challenges, they do not just resign with “it is what it is.”
Faith Speaks
By faith, God spoke galaxies into existence. By faith, we can speak our world into existence. You can change your situation by adding words to your faith. What are you saying about your situation? Are you speaking positively, expecting your situation to change for the better? Your words have the power to shape your reality, so speak with hope and optimism.
One day, Jesus and His disciples were on the way from Bethany to Jerusalem when Jesus got hungry. He saw a fig tree in the distance, but when He came to it, He found nothing but leaves. Jesus cursed the fig tree, saying, “No man eat fruit from you hereafter forever.” He didn’t accept “it is what it is” and took action instead.
Channel Your Faith Through God
The next day, Jesus and His disciples passed by the fig tree and saw it had dried up from the roots. Peter said, “Rabbi, look! “The fig tree which You cursed has withered away.” Jesus answered, “Have faith in God. For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says (Mark, chapter 11 KJV).
Jesus was illustrating how faith works together with your words. In addition to having faith, you have to change your situation by speaking to it. When you have pain in your body, please don’t call it what it is. Call it what you want it to be. If you go around all day saying, “My back is killing me,” your back will never get better. Instead of going around talking about your pain, start talking about how God delivered you from your pain. Your intellect will tell you, “Stop complaining and deal with it!” That’s because the natural mind cannot comprehend faith. Faith believes what it cannot see, whereas the natural mind only believes what it can see.
It Is All About Your Faith
In Numbers, chapter 21, the Israelites began grumbling against God and Moses. They were discouraged because the terrain was rugged, and they had exhausted their food and water reserves. They asked Moses, “Why have you brought us out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? We don’t have any bread, we don’t have any water, and we loathe this worthless bread that God gives us to eat.” When God heard the people complaining, He instructed Moses to gather them together at the well in Rephidim, and He would provide them with water. However, when they came to the well, it was empty. Then Moses commanded them, saying, “Sing to the well.” Sing, “Spring up, O well.” As they sang, water suddenly began to spring out of the empty well.
The next time you have a situation that appears unchangeable, don’t say, “It is what it is.” Have faith in God and speak to your situation. Rather than calling it as it is, call it what you want it to be. Your friends might say it is what it is, but don’t surrender your faith. Keep believing in God and calling it what you want it to be. Remember, you are not defeated unless you accept defeat. Stay determined and resilient in the face of adversity. It is all about transforming ‘it is what it is’ into what you envision.
