“Lord, how they have increased who trouble me!
Many are they who rise up against me.
Many are they who say of me,
“There is no help for him in God.”

But You, O Lord, are a shield for me,
My glory and the One who lifts up my head.”
— Psalms 3:1-3 (NKJV)

Psalm 3 is a heartfelt prayer written by King David during one of the most difficult periods of his life. The psalm captures David’s feelings as he fled from his son Absalom. Absalom had led a rebellion against him and gathered a vast army—some say as many as 10,000 soldiers—to pursue and take his life. Outnumbered and betrayed by someone so close, David had every reason to feel afraid and overwhelmed. Yet, instead of relying solely on his own resources or military strength, David remained confident in despair. He turned to God.

His prayer expresses a deep trust in God’s protection and deliverance, even in the face of overwhelming odds. This context highlights why David’s response is so meaningful. In his darkest hour, his confidence and peace came from believing that God’s will and purpose would ultimately prevail. Through adversity, David found strength and was confident in distress because of his faith.

Convinced Even in Despair

Are you feeling stressed about something today? Maybe you’re worried about your financial situation—not having enough money to meet your obligations or meeting a tough deadline at work. You might be navigating challenging family relationships or dealing with a medical condition. At times, it can feel like your problems are closing in on you from every side. No matter what you do, you can’t seem to get away from your troubles. While it’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed in seasons of trouble, it’s important to remember that you’re never alone. After all, God is with you.

You can be confident in distress, just like David. Rather than carrying your burdens all by yourself or relying only on your own abilities, consider following David’s example from the Bible. Just as David trusted God in adversity, you too can find strength, comfort, and peace by turning to God for help. Indeed, choosing to trust God helps you remain confident in distress even when the situation feels impossible.

Heavenly Father, I admit that there are times when I feel overwhelmed by my problems. I thank You for listening to my cries for help. I look to You for comfort, peace, and strength to remain confident when things look hopeless.

This is so powerful and comforting.
May we remember that in our hardest seasons, the Lord is our shield, our strength, and the lifter of our heads. He never leaves us to fight alone. 🙏
