A Personal Story of Trusting God

Years ago, when my son Jamil was seven, I took him fishing in the Louisiana marsh. A few clouds were gathering, and I considered canceling the trip. Instead, I rented a boat and took him out.

The marsh was known for good fishing. To reach it, we had to row down the main channel toward the Rigolets, a deep-water strait in Louisiana.

After rowing about a quarter mile down the channel, we turned into a smaller canal that opened into the marsh. The fish were biting, and before long, we had filled our forty-quart ice chest with bream. It had been a good day, but the weather was beginning to turn.

When the Storm Made Quitting Feel Easy

Then I noticed a dark cloud building overhead. It looked threatening, so I decided it was time to leave. As soon as I rowed into the channel toward the boat launch, the sky opened. Rain poured down, and the wind rose without warning.

I rowed with all my strength, but the wind drove the boat backward toward the Rigolets. One thought stayed with me: giving up was not an option. My son was with me. I was determined to keep rowing until we were safe.

Jesus Stays with You in Hard Times

Through it all, I prayed that God would help me to remain steady in the storm. The rain was so heavy that I could barely see. My arms ached, and my breath grew short. No matter how hard I rowed, I felt like I was getting nowhere.

I was almost spent when the rain suddenly stopped, and the wind became still. I wiped the water from my face. The boat launch was only fifty yards ahead. In that moment, I thanked God. I knew once again that quitting could never be my choice.

What Endurance Looks Like in the Christian Life

That is why endurance matters so much in the Christian life. Jesus endured the cross for us and did not turn back. When the road became painful, He remained faithful. He trusted the Father, held to God’s promises, and kept moving forward. If you are weary today, remember that your Savior understands suffering and will help you stand firm.

How to Keep Going When Life Is Hard

Jesus said that in this world we will have trouble (John 16:33). He also promised never to leave or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). So when you feel like quitting, choose trust over despair. Call on the Lord, then take the next step in faith. The same God who helped me in the storm will help you in yours. You are not facing this alone.
