“David asked the Lord what he should do.”
— 2 Samuel 5:23 CEV
Seeking God’s Guidance Before Decisions
Before you jump “head-first” into any decision, do you pause to ask the Lord what you should do? David made a habit of seeking God’s guidance before taking action. His dependence on God’s divine direction wasn’t just a fleeting moment of faith. It was a consistent pattern throughout David’s life. In 2 Samuel 5, David’s story clearly illustrates this. In this chapter, David conquers Jerusalem and faces opposition from the Jebusites, who believed their fortress was impenetrable. Despite their confidence, David sought God’s guidance before each encounter.
The Jebusites, trusting in their stronghold, attacked David in great numbers, yet David’s confidence remained rooted in God. With God’s help, he overcame them. After defeating the Jebusites the first time, David could have relied on his own strength or the memory of his previous victory. When the Jebusites returned for a second attack, David didn’t assume he could win again. Instead, he paused and asked the Lord for direction.
The Importance of Continual Dependence
Do you ask the Lord’s opinion on matters regarding your daily life? David did not rely on his previous victories; he sought the Lord. Likewise, we should also remember to seek the Lord. We should seek the Lord’s wisdom in every situation—even those we think we know well. This was a pattern in David’s life. This pattern of asking the Lord for direction should serve as a reminder for us today. Therefore, let us bring our choices, uncertainties, and activities before God. Doing this will keep us humble and dependent on His wisdom.
Contemplate the choices you face at work, the challenges in your relationships, or even everyday decisions like managing your time or responding to conflict. While in those quiet moments, pausing to inquire of the Lord for guidance can make all the difference. Whether it’s a new project, a difficult conversation, or a recurring issue, seeking His counsel helps us avoid relying only on our own experience or strength. Put your trust in the Lord, and God will deliver you. Let David’s example encourage you to invite God into all aspects of your journey. By seeking His guidance, you can trust that He will lead you through whatever lies ahead, providing clarity, wisdom, and peace along the way.
Dear God, I am confident that You will help me overcome my fears. Give me clarity when resistance appears. Lead me in all areas of my life. You are my Rock and Fortress, in You do I place my confidence.

Yesss! 🙌Praise God for you sharing this!! I don’t always do that and sometimes that can spell trouble!!
We are all guilty of this until we realize that we don’t know as much as we think we do. And yes, bornagain732, it can, and often does spell trouble.
Yes! Thank you! ~Beth 🙏❤️
Thank you, Eric. David’s example is a needed reminder that past victories never replace present dependence. Seeking the Lord again and again keeps the heart humble and the direction clear. I appreciate this call to pause before acting and to trust God beyond our own experience.
Another much-needed reminder. To pause, pray, and seek God’s guidance in everything. Amen 🙌
