The Role of a Father: What the Bible Says About Fatherhood

Featured Post Image - The Role of a Father: What the Bible Says About Fatherhood

What is the role of a father? The role of a father is far more than providing for a family. From a biblical perspective, a father is called to lead with love, teach God’s Word, discipline with wisdom, and help build a strong spiritual foundation in the home. As Father’s Day approaches, many people think about gifts and celebrations, but it is also a good time to reflect on what makes a good father. While the world often highlights absent or harmful fathers, this article focuses on the good fathers who embrace the responsibilities of biblical fatherhood.

Fatherhood Begins Before Birth

In many parts of the animal world, the process of fatherhood begins before birth. When young males reach maturity and compete for mating rights, the females observe which male appears strongest and most capable. In that sense, the role of a father begins forming before offspring are born. While human fatherhood is far more complex, this example reminds us that a father’s influence often starts earlier than many people realize.

In human families, the role of a father has changed over time. Years ago, many expectant fathers waited from a distance while female relatives handled much of the birth experience. A father might have learned the baby’s gender from a phone call after the child was already born.

Today, that picture has changed. Good fathers are present before the baby is born and often remain actively involved from pregnancy through childhood. According to the National Library of Medicine, fathers now participate more actively in child care than they did in the past. A father’s presence during childbirth can help strengthen the bond between father and child from the very beginning. Still, the biblical role of a father goes beyond physical presence. A father is called to raise his children in a way that honors God.

What the Bible Says About Fathers

The Bible says much about the role of a father. Scripture shows that fathers are called to be present, to lead, to teach, to love, and to guide their children in righteousness. A father’s presence in the home matters because children need instruction, stability, grace, and spiritual direction.

The Bible teaches that God is the ultimate Father. Our Heavenly Father is the perfect example of love, compassion, forgiveness, grace, leadership, comfort, discipline, and guidance. Earthly fathers should look to Him as the model for biblical fatherhood.

Fathers Should Discipline with Love

One important role of a father is discipline. Biblical discipline is not harsh, selfish, or humiliating. Instead, a good father corrects his children with love, patience, and godly instruction.

“And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.” Ephesians 6:4

When God says, “Do not provoke your children to anger,” He is warning fathers not to discipline in a way that is humiliating, abusive, petty, or unreasonable. Good fathers discipline with lovingkindness because that reflects the character of our Heavenly Father.

“And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” Deuteronomy 6:6-71

A good father, meaning a righteous father, takes his children to Jesus. He teaches his children about God and helps them understand His Word. Righteousness does not mean perfection. It means believing God’s Word and living by it. Abraham believed the Lord, and God counted that faith as righteousness (Genesis 15:6). A father doesn’t need to be perfect or highly educated to teach his children about God. He only needs to read the Bible and follow it faithfully.

Fatherhood Means Teaching Your Children to Forgive

“Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6

Children learn by watching their parents, especially their father. Fathers teach not only with words, but also with actions. Your children notice how you respond to stress, conflict, and disappointment. They notice how you treat their mother and how you handle anger. One vital role of a father is to model forgiveness rather than revenge.

For that reason, fathers should not teach their children to get even when they are hurt. Instead, they should teach them to forgive. To teach forgiveness well, a father must remember that God has forgiven him and expects him to forgive others.

“And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses.” Colossians 2:13

When fathers teach their children this way, sons see what godly fatherhood looks like, and daughters learn how to recognize the character of a godly man.

Build Your Family on a Solid Foundation

The role of a father also requires wisdom. A wise father builds his family on the solid foundation of God’s Word. He does not lead carelessly or leave spiritual matters to chance.

“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock.” — Matthew 7:24

God compares building a family to building a house. No one wants a house built on unstable ground. In the same way, a good father establishes his family on the truth of God’s Word.

“He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock.”
Luke 6:48

Fathers play a crucial role in family life, and that responsibility should never be taken lightly. God has entrusted fathers with an important assignment in the home, so they should approach fatherhood with prayer, purpose, and commitment.

Fathers should not let the culture minimize their calling. God gives fathers real responsibility for caring for their families, guarding His truth in the home, and protecting their children with love and wisdom.

Bro. Eric: First of all, let me wish you and all of the father’s who read this a very OUTSTANDING Father’s Day! How appropriate a topic . I was particularly intrigued by your biblical assesement and description of of what defines a “good father”. How you chose to use the Scriptures to illustrate building a house on a good foundation. I was led to share another passage that I beleive will certainly emphasize how essential the task of fatherhood is to our Heavenly Father. “But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel”(1 Timothy 5:8). Thank you for sharing!

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY to you as well, Bro. Jefferson, and thanks for your comment. The role of a father is misunderstood and understated. To be a good father, one has to be a good disciple. Oh, and thank for reminding fathers of their role in providing for the family.
