The question of common sense vs God-sense matters in a society that often praises what seems reasonable. This conflict between common sense vs God-sense is significant for anyone seeking spiritual wisdom. Does God want us to lean on our own understanding, or to seek His wisdom above our own? I have learned that while common sense may appear practical, it can still lead us away from the deeper truth found in God.
People often talk about common sense as if it were the key to understanding life and coping with all we face. But common sense is simply what is common—what most people agree sounds reasonable. It is human judgment in practical matters. The question is whether what feels natural to us is always aligned with God’s wisdom.
The Goodness of God-Sense
The God we serve is incredible. He is good to us even when life wears us down. It hurts to laugh when our spirits are wounded, and our hearts are broken.
It is in those broken places—places only God can heal—that His wisdom shines most clearly. How do we make sense of something that feels so wrong? I have come to understand that even when I do not understand His ways, God is still right, and His wisdom sustains us through life’s hardest moments.
When my dear sister, Catherine Andrews, passed from death to life, my natural emotions rose all at once—yelling, screaming, and crying. Those responses were human and understandable, but none of them could change what had happened. At the end of all that grief, I still wanted my sister back.
Despite the pain of loss, I find comfort in the belief that my sister is now in the loving embrace of God. Her absence is like that of a missing family member, a longing for their return. But deep down, I know she is at peace in our Father’s Bosom. This knowledge brings a sense of reassurance and security, a comfort that common sense vs God-sense discussions often highlight, because common sense cannot provide it.
Worldly Wisdom Opposes Divine Sense
Every day of our lives, we should be preparing to leave this life. No matter how much we would like to stay here, God has already said that, like everything else, our lives have seasons. “There is a time to be born and a time to die” (Ecclesiastes 3:2).
Anyone who professes to be a Christian should remember that life, as we know it, does not belong to us. To cling to it as though it were ours to keep is a form of denial. God-sense teaches us to see life through His truth rather than through human understanding alone.
A Sense Far Above the World
To rely on common sense about God is to approach life with human opinion instead of divine understanding. God-sense gives us wisdom for living. In every circumstance, Christians are called to seek God’s mind rather than depend only on what seems natural or reasonable. In summary, the ongoing debate of common sense vs God-sense asks us to prioritise spiritual discernment over human wisdom.
I know it is God’s will and right to do as He chooses. God created us for His purpose. We should not doubt for one moment that “The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness, the world and those who dwell therein” (Psalm 24:1).
Human reasoning falls short when it tries to claim ownership over what belongs to God. Life on earth is temporary, and God-sense reminds us of that truth. What we hold in this life is a gift, not a possession we control. Still, the idea of common sense vs God-sense should remind us to focus on what truly matters.
A person who has gained wisdom understands that we do not truly own anything in this world. God’s goodness allows us to share in the blessings of life for a time. So rather than embracing the logic of ordinary thinking, Christians should desire to have the mind of God as it relates to life.
Satan uses human reasoning to spread lies and incomplete truths. When we depend on our own understanding apart from God, we become more vulnerable to deception. Sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness, envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness, hate, violence, and pride all grow where God’s wisdom is rejected. That is why ordinary thinking, by itself, is not enough.
God-Sense Empowers Spiritual Gifts
By contrast, God’s sense helps us understand that we can overcome Satan. When we rely on God’s wisdom, we become aware that His Spirit is alive within us, and that His power is far greater than the spirit of this world. Through God-sense, we also learn to use the spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12:4-12) He has given us.
To see rightly when I am wrong is part of the goodness of God-sense. So if ordinary thinking ever leads you to ask, “Who is God?” the truest answer is still this: God is Who He Is.
