“Then He opened their minds.”
— Luke 24:45 NIV

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Many of us have read the Bible and learned its stories from childhood. Yet there is a significant difference between knowing the words and truly grasping their meaning. Jesus’ disciples, like so many faithful Jews of their time, were familiar with Scripture. However, they did not fully comprehend them. Luke 24:45 NIV tells us that Jesus opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. The discussion on the road to Emmaus wasn’t about intellectual awareness; it was a spiritual awakening.

The Light of Christ

When we speak of ‘the light of Christ’ or of being ‘enlightened by Christ,’ we’re describing the unique way Jesus enables us to see and understand spiritual truths that would otherwise remain hidden. Think of it like entering a dark room with a flashlight. You may know furniture is there, but without light, you can’t see it. Only by turning on the flashlight do you recognize where everything is and how it fits together. In the same way, Christ illuminates our minds to the Scriptures. He helps us not only to read the Bible but to perceive its deeper meaning and relevance for our lives.

Imagine trying to read a complex poem in a language you only partially understand. You might pick out familiar words, but the true beauty and message elude you. When Christ ‘opens our minds,’ it’s as if He’s both the teacher and the translator, making the message accessible and personal. This illumination isn’t just intellectual; it’s spiritual—it helps us see how God’s truth applies to our everyday situations, guiding our choices, giving comfort, and revealing purpose.

Christ Enlightens Our Understanding

Jesus’ disciples experienced this profound enlightenment after encountering the risen Lord on the road to Emmaus. Suddenly, passages from the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms now made sense in a new way. They saw how all Scripture pointed to Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. The apostle Peter echoed this sentiment in his writings:

“Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care, trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories that would follow. It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.”
— 1 Peter 1:10-12 NIV

Peter explains that the prophets foretold Christ’s suffering and glory, but the full meaning was clear only after Jesus opened their minds.

Life Application

Consider your own experience with Scripture. Have you ever found yourself reading a familiar passage, only to suddenly discover a new depth or relevance you hadn’t seen before? Was there a time when a verse seemed to speak directly to your situation, offering comfort or direction? These moments are glimpses of spiritual illumination—the light of Christ shining in your heart.

Do you approach Scripture seeking only information, or are you open to receiving true transformation? You can invite Christ to open your mind, just as He did for the disciples. You need only to ask the Lord to enlighten your mind to the truth of the Scriptures and allow that truth to shape your life.

Don’t settle for a surface-level knowledge of God’s Word. Instead, earnestly seek the light of Christ, asking Him to enlighten your mind and heart. Only then can you move from mere familiarity with Scripture to genuine understanding and application.

May your life reflect the truth you have received, and may you always desire to learn at the feet of Jesus, the true Teacher.

Lord Jesus, enlighten my mind and open my heart, that I may see the truth of the Scriptures and apply that truth in my daily living.

There’s a big difference between reading Scripture and truly seeing it. Only Jesus can open our minds to understand.
