God’s Character: The True Standard

To uncover who you truly are beneath appearances and good intentions, test your character against God’s character—the only true standard for spiritual growth.

Religious principles may make us appear morally upright. But our character reveals our true identity. It is seen in the choices we make, the words we speak, and the way we treat others—especially when no one is watching.

The Danger of Comparison

Rather than use God’s character as our standard, we often compare ourselves with others. We focus on their weaknesses while overlooking our own. The result is a false sense of spiritual maturity.

Yet the flaws of others are not the proper measure of our character. God’s perfect character is. When we measure ourselves against God’s holiness, truth, love, mercy, and faithfulness, pride gives way to humility.

Honest reflection begins, along with a desire for genuine transformation.

Jesus illustrated this danger in the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector (Luke 18:9–14). The Pharisee compared himself with others and praised his own righteousness.

The tax collector, however, humbly acknowledged his need for mercy. Jesus said the humble man—not the self-righteous one—went home justified before God.

Invite God to Search Your Heart

The parable makes the lesson clear. Only by comparing our character with God’s can we see whether our hearts and lives align with the principles we profess.

This honest examination begins when we invite God to search us.

“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts.”
— Psalm 139:23 (KJV)

Psalm 139:23 invites us to ask God to examine the motives, thoughts, and desires hidden within our hearts.

As we test our character against God’s, His holiness, truth, love, and faithfulness reveal where we are growing. They also show where we still need transformation. Outward appearances and personal standards cannot do that.

Test Your Character Against God’s Character

Because God alone is the true standard, stop measuring your character by the failures of others or by the image you present to the world.

Stand honestly before God. Let His holiness expose what needs to change, and allow His mercy to heal what is broken.

Allow His love to shape who you are becoming.

With that posture, this examination leads not to condemnation, but transformation. Pray with courage. Listen with humility. Respond with obedience.

When God reveals pride, choose humility.

When He reveals bitterness, choose forgiveness.

And when He reveals inconsistency, choose integrity.

Let your private choices increasingly reflect the character you publicly profess.

Don’t ask, “Am I better than someone else?”
Ask, “Am I becoming more like God?”
“What is God revealing in my character that needs His transforming grace today?”

A Prayer for Transformation

Lord, search my heart and reveal anything that does not reflect Your character. Replace my pride with humility, my bitterness with forgiveness, and my inconsistency with integrity. Shape my thoughts, words, and actions so that my life increasingly reflects You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
