Death Stings But Christ Removed Its Stinger

A personal reminder that death stings

This past weekend, I attended my brother-in-law’s homegoing celebration. In that moment, I was reminded in a deeply personal way that death stings, but Christ has removed its stinger.

Grief after the death of a loved one brings us face to face with a reality we often try to avoid. As I reflected on the loss, the nh 8ozsorrow, and the finality of death, the words of the apostle Paul came to mind:

“O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” — 1 Corinthians 15:55

Those words caused me to pause. I have known that sting many times before. I have lost my mother, my father, sisters, brothers, many friends, and a son to death.

Each loss has left its own wound. Each goodbye has carried its own weight of sorrow. Yet somehow, with time, I had forgotten just how sharp death’s sting can feel.

Sitting in that service reminded me again that death hurts deeply. Its pain reaches into the hearts of those left behind. Still, even in sorrow, God comforts the greiving. The Bible assures us that death has no final victory.

The comfort of the Gospel when death hurts

But the comfort of the Gospel is this: death may wound us, but it does not get the final word. When someone we love is taken by death, the pain is real. The wound runs deep.

Yet through His sacrifice on the cross and His victory over the grave, Christ removed death’s stinger. He broke death’s ultimate power. This is the heart of 1 Corinthians 15:55 comfort.

For those who trust in Him, death is not the end of the story. We have lasting hope in Christ after loss.

Grieving with hope in Christ

If you are grieving today, please know this: your sorrow does not mean that your faith is weak. Death hurts because love is real.

Jesus Himself wept at the grave of His friend, Lazarus. He still meets us with that same compassion in our sorrow, as the God of all comfort.

We may still cry. We may still miss those we love, and we may still feel the ache of their absence. But through Christ, our grieving is not without hope and comfort.

Because Christ lives, death has been defeated. One day He will wipe every tear away and heal every sorrow. Every believer will stand in the presence of the Lord forever.

Until that day, may the God of all comfort strengthen every grieving heart as He has mine. May He remind us again: death may sting, but Christ has removed its stinger. Death does not have the final word—Christ does.
