“The generous soul will be made rich,
And he who waters will also be watered himself.”
— Proverbs 11:25
To receive, we must give. Gathering requires scattering. To find our joy, we must bring joy to others. To nurture our spiritual growth, we must seek the spiritual well-being of others. But we must do these things in love. This journey is not solitary but connects us to a larger spiritual community. It is a journey of reciprocity, where God’s blessings reciprocate our actions of giving and nurturing. When we nourish others, in return, God nourishes us. When we make ourselves useful to Him, our heavenly Father blesses us. He gives us more ability to help others. This reciprocity binds us together, making us part of a larger spiritual community.
We must exercise faith in God to strengthen our talents and dormant faculties. This faith is a belief, active trust, and confidence in God’s guidance and provision. We will never know what we can do unless we try. When we give of ourselves, we strengthen our spiritual growth. We do not know how to be sympathetic until we dry someone’s tears and comfort the grief of another. Through these acts of kindness, we often find our growth potential. We gain instruction for ourselves as we try to teach others.
Character of Giving
The Bible encourages us to pray for one another. Intercessory prayer humbles us. We discover grace in places we never thought we would find it. We often find ourselves in the presence of grace when helping others and working for their good. God’s grace is the supply that nourishes our spiritual growth. We often find grace in unexpected places, which surprises us and enlightens our spiritual journey. In these unexpected moments, we truly understand the depth of God’s grace. When we work for the good of others, God works His goodness in our lives. When we make someone else happy, God recompenses us with happiness.
The widow of Zarephath shared her last meal with the prophet Elijah. God provided her with food during the drought. Remember that we find grace in unexpected places. If you share kindness with someone today, God will supply grace for your spiritual growth. If you give, it shall be returned to you. A good measure, pressed down and running over, will be given back to you by another.
Dear God, anoint me with the spirit of giving. Teach me to give to others with a pure heart so that I may receive more grace to give.
