If the Bible Says I Am Healed, Why Am I Sick?

Why Are Many Sick and Not Healed

Even when we question, ‘If the Bible says I am healed, why am I sick?‘, our faith is our strength. The curse of the law may bring sickness and disease, as Deuteronomy 28 of the Christian Bible tells us. But we must remember that sickness has limitations. Christ fulfilled the law in His ultimate act of love and reversed the curse when they scourged Him. By His stripes, we are healed. Our faith in His sacrifice empowers us to claim our healing.

Isaiah 53:5 tells us that His captors wounded Jesus for our transgressions and bruised Him for our iniquities. The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes, we are healed. This scripture raises two profound questions:

  • (1) If the Bible states that Christ’s punishment healed us, why do we still grapple with sickness and disease?
  • (2) Why does healing seem elusive?

Supernatural Healing

Like many of you, I firmly believe in ‘supernatural healing.’ However, I often question why numerous fellow Christians do not experience this healing. This shared pursuit of understanding has driven me to investigate the Bible for answers. Along my journey, I uncovered compelling insights that reveal why we may not experience healing from sickness and disease. I am eager to share these significant findings with my readers. I initiated my research in 1 Corinthians chapter 10, and several scripture verses stood out.

2 Corinthians 10:13 ESV

The only temptations that you have are the same temptations that all people have. But you can trust God. He will not let you be tempted more than you can bear. But when you are tempted, God will also give you a way to escape that temptation. Then you will be able to endure it.

2 Corinthians 10:14-16 [AMP]

Therefore, my beloved, run [keep far, far away] from [any sort of] idolatry [and that includes loving anything more than God or participating in anything that leads to sin and enslaves the soul]. I am speaking as to wise and sensible people; judge [carefully and thoughtfully consider] for yourselves what I say. Is the cup of blessing which we bless [at the Lord’s Supper] not a sharing in the blood of Christ? [Indeed it is.] Is the bread which we break not a sharing in the body of Christ? [Indeed it is.]”

Could this be how the Bible tells us to receive our healing?

The Origin of Sickness and Disease

Proverbs 25:2 says it is God’s glory to conceal a matter, but the glory of kings to search it out. Let the Holy Spirit speak to our hearts as we seek to answer the question: “If the Bible says we are healed, why are we sick?”

When God created Adam, He did not give him a rulebook of commandments. God gave Adam only one commandment. He told Adam that He could eat from every tree in the garden except one. God identified that tree as the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. He told him that the day he ate from it, he would surely die. (Genesis 2:16-17). God had not yet created Eve when He gave Adam this commandment. Knowing this, Satan disguised himself as a serpent and initiated a conversation with Eve.

The devil asked Eve, “Did God say that you could not eat none of the fruit in the Garden?”

Eve replied, “God said we could eat of any tree, but we are not to eat fruit from only one tree in the garden. God said we must not eat it or even touch it, or we will die.”

“You’ll not die,” said the serpent. “God knows very well that the instant you eat it, you will become like him, for your eyes will open—you will be able to distinguish good from evil!” (Genesis 3:1-5 TLB).

The Curse

So Eve ate the forbidden fruit and gave some to Adam, who ate. Thus, sin entered the world through one man’s disobedience (Romans 5:12). Here, we learn that sickness and disease are the consequences of sin, and sin is the repercussion of disobedience.

If the Bible says I am healed, why does Galatians 3:10 say God will curse everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law? Sickness and disease are among the many curses of the law that will overtake you for disobeying God’s commandments. Everyone who relies on keeping the law to be justified is under the curse of the law. However, no one is justified before God by the law, for the righteous will live by faith (Galatians 3:11-13).

Redeemed From the Curse

The strict demands of the law are too demanding for any human to fulfill. Therefore, when the time was right, God sent His Son, born of a woman and born under the law, to redeem us from the law’s curse (Galatians 4:4). Jesus took on the penalty of that curse in His body. He broke the curse to heal us and became sin on our behalf. The Bible says I am healed because Jesus has forever reversed the curse. He bore our pain and sickness so we could live abundantly without pain and illness. If God declared that He healed us, then we must question why we still experience sickness.

This brings to mind 1 Corinthians chapter 10, where God, speaking through the Apostle Paul, says, “…but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” However, three verses later, verse 16 states, “The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?” Could it be that communion is the way to escape or reverse sickness and disease? Is it possible that the Bible says I am healed because God provides healing through our participation in Holy Communion?

Restored to Health

On the night of His betrayal, Jesus took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body, broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same manner, He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me” (1 Corinthians 11:23-25).

Holy Communion, also known as “The Lord’s Supper,” is a sacred time of fellowship with God. It is a time when believers in Christ come together to commemorate Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. Holy Communion involves the partaking of bread and wine accompanied by prayer and singing. We are healed by faith when we partake of Holy Communion. I submit this question: Could Holy Communion be how the Bible instructs us to receive healing?

Before partaking in the Holy Communion, we should carefully and prayerfully examine ourselves and our relationship with Christ. Anyone who eats and drinks without solemn reverence and heartfelt gratitude for the sacrifice of Christ eats and drinks a judgment on himself. According to the Bible, the reason many believers do not receive healing, and some fall asleep (die), is that believers do not correctly discern the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 11:27-30 [AMP]).

The Communion Elements

The church places a lot of emphasis on the blood of Jesus while scarcely mentioning the scourging He endured the night before He was crucified. Scourging was not just physical suffering but a profound spiritual sacrifice. Why did God allow Jesus’ captors to scourge Him before they crucified Him? Why didn’t God send Him straight to the cross? Christians often discuss Jesus’ blood. But we say very little about the scourging He underwent for our healing.

Jesus, in His selfless act, said, “I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever;  the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world. Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you.

“The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life and that they may have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). Leviticus 17:11 says life is in the blood. However, in John 6:51, Jesus said He gives His flesh for the life of the world. Jesus’ sacrifice was not merely a sacrifice, but a transformation. Jesus wanted us to know that He poured out His blood for our sins, and they tore His flesh so that we might receive healing.

Restore Your Health by Eating

Satan is a master at perverting things, including the word of God. According to Bible references, I am healed. Nevertheless, my body and my medical records indicate that I am not. The devil does not want us to know the power in a small piece of bread and a cup of wine. Some churches partake of communion once yearly, others once a month, and others celebrate the event weekly. Jesus said that as often as you partake of communion, you call to mind His suffering and death. This remembrance is not just a ritual but a profound expression of reverence and gratitude for the sacrifice He made for us.

True to His word, God used the very thing that tempted the first couple to sin and made a way of escape with it. It was eating that got us in trouble in the first place. The first man forfeited his health by eating something he should not have eaten. But friends, you don’t have to endure sickness and disease helplessly. Today, you can restore your health by eating.

Partake In Communion At Home

Participating in communion is a personal choice you can make today in the comfort of your own home. To participate in communion at home, set aside a piece of bread and a cup of wine or grape juice, and then pray over these elements, asking God to bless them and use them for healing. Remember, by partaking in the body of Christ, which is the bread, you experience bodily healing. For by His stripes, you are healed. By partaking in the blood of Christ, you experience forgiveness of sins, which leads to eternal salvation.

Let us give all the glory to God my sister. God is our loving Father. He sent His son to trade places with us. The devil condemned us with sickness and disease for Adam’s disobedience. That condemnation fell upon us as his descendants. But praise God there is now therefore no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus. The curse has been reversed. Jesus loves you, sister. By His stripes, you are healed. Believe it and receive it, in Jesus’ name.
